The Learning Continues Through the June Summit

Amanda HumesThe 2022 June Summit marks the launch of our 12-month pilot project to incorporate the Listen Include Respect global guidelines into our work. Developed by Inclusion International and Down Syndrome International, these guidelines are designed to help organizations make their work inclusive, so people with intellectual disability can fully participate.

Not only are the ideas in these guidelines aligned with our mission, but they are a natural extension of our inaugural June Summit in 2019. That first June Summit brought international self-advocate leaders together for a panel discussion about human rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), deinstitutionalization, and inclusion. If you would like to watch the recording, or view individual speakers, you can find the videos on our YouTube channel.

The workshops that followed the public panel discussion provided self-advocates with opportunities to learn about their rights and develop their leadership skills. Although the focus was on developing self-advocate leaders, the workshops provided a learning opportunity for the Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who were attending in a support role.

Our 12-month pilot project builds on the learning that was already happening for DSPs during the first June Summit. DSPs will gain a greater understanding of their role in the global advocacy and inclusion movement and how they can work alongside people with intellectual disability to ensure their human rights.

We’re looking forward to what we will learn over the next year. We hope you’ll join us for the launch at the June Summit on June 22.
