SUMMARY:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions
DESCRIPTION:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions\n \nMuch can be learned about human effort\, societal forces of oppression and marginalization\, and the possibilities for change by studying the rise and fall of “The Great Institutions.” This presentation will describe the founding of such institutions\, with lofty and earnest aspirations\, through the vast growth of segregation and congregation fed by eugenics ideology\, and the eventual decline of the “total institution.” \nThrough photos\, stories of people’s lives and narrative\, we will explore the connections with today’s services\, the insidious staying power of segregation\, and the lessons we can draw from this. This workshop will be led by Betsy Neuville\, who worked for many years creating community alternatives for hundreds of institutionalized people all over the world and has supported the settlement agreements at numerous facilities which have promised better lives for people. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Closing the Revolving Doors: A Lifespan Approach to Deinstitutionalization – a Side Event at the 18th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD
DESCRIPTION:Keystone Human Services International is pleased to organize the side event “Closing the Revolving Doors: A Lifespan Approach to Deinstitutionalization” during the 18th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Panelists will discuss some of the critical issues\, challenges and opportunities around deinstitutionalization for children and adults with disabilities and share success stories of partnerships that have led to sustainable care reform and community-based supports. \nInstitutionalization for children and adults with disabilities is a revolving door. Once someone enters an institution\, there are few exit pathways\, despite the affirmation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) of the right of all people with disabilities to live independently in and be part of the community. \nA lifespan approach incorporating care reform\, is required to transition away from institutions as the default form of care and achieve full participation and acceptance in the community. \nThe side event will: \n\nDraw from experiences particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and the Global South to highlight the need for a lifespan approach\nHighlight successful examples of transitioning away from institutions\nCollectively identify key action points to advance deinstitutionalization and operationalize Article 19\nExplore how deinstitutionalization and care reform play a key role in building family and community resilience\, social cohesion\, and sustainable development\nIdentify ways in which deinstitutionalization principles can be embedded in the global discourse around the SDGs and post-2030 development agenda\n\nThe event is organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Moldova in New York\, the Ministry of Labor & Social Protection\, Government of Moldova\, and Keystone Human Services International with co-hosts the Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development Office\, Government of UK; UNICEF; and Hope and Homes for Children. \nThis in-person event will also be streamed live on UN Web TV. The Direct Link to view our side event is  https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k15/k15x366bl8. \nMore details about the side event are available through the UN’s COSP website.

SUMMARY:SRV Study Group: Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum
DESCRIPTION:The mindsets held about people with disabilities\, particularly mental disorders\, and African Americans permeate our collective culture and drastically influence what is done in the name of “treatment.”  Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum explores these issues as it chronicles the 93-year-old history of Crownsville State Hospital in Maryland\, the last standing segregated asylum in our country. Built by the very people who would eventually become incarcerated within its walls\, the story of Crownsville traces the legacy of slavery to the treatment of African American people’s bodies and minds in our current mental healthcare system. After reading the book\, participants will join SRV Leadership members Barb Dyer\, Shonna Stevens\, Vicki Hoshower\, Katina Atmore\, and Matthew Nguyen for a conversation centering on the themes of SRV\, such as mindsets\, interpersonal identification\, and unconsciousness\, and how they relate to the historical contents detailed in the book. \nThe book will be provided to participants upon registration. Prior attendance at a full 32-hour SRV workshop\, in-person or online\, is necessary to register for this study group. \nRegister \n
