SUMMARY:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success
DESCRIPTION:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success\nThe history of society’s treatment of people with mental disorders reveals\, time after time\, that backsliding almost always follows progress in our understanding and response to people with mental differences. Periods of enlightenment have been followed by periods of darkness\, with long stretches of neglect in between. On the heels of brutality and some of the worst abuses of people with mental illness\, the reformation of the Moral Treatment movement in the 19th century was responsible for some of the greatest outcomes in the lives of people living with psychiatric disorders during that time. The ideas and assumptions of the Moral Treatment movement remain highly positive and useful solidifying its significance in the history of psychiatry\, yet few have ever heard about it. Please join the Keystone Institute for an exploration of this powerful movement and the potential of its lessons to influence the field of human service. \nRegister \nAbout the History\, Heroes\, and Pioneers in the Field Series \n“History\, despite its wrenching pain\, cannot be unlived\, however\, if faced with courage\, we need not live it again.” – Maya Angelou \nIt is a longstanding value of Keystone Human Services that in order to truly understand someone\, we must understand the person’s history; not only the story of one’s life\, but also the experiences of one’s people over time. Yet more and more society is being confronted with gaping holes in our knowledge of the histories of certain groups of people which have been forgotten\, suppressed\, and even erased. In 2022 the Keystone Institute will be offering educational opportunities\, open to all employees\, designed to introduce our workforce to histories\, heroes\, and pioneers in the fields of our services. We will explore historical events\, life conditions\, and major figures who have served as change agents within the fields of disability\, and mental difference. In our remembrance of many who have come before us\, we will together affirm our collective commitment to advance the human spirit of those we serve. \nDate: April 14 2022 @ 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT

SUMMARY:Distance Introduction to SRV
DESCRIPTION:Distance Introduction to SRV\nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations. \nIn collaboration with Millersville University\, enrolled students can take this course for graduate level course credits. Click here for more information. \nWeek 1:\nJune 6\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm: Live session with 2 additional hours of independent assignments\nJune 7\, 10:00 am – 2:15 pm with 30 additional minutes of independent assignments\nJune 8\, 10:00 am – 4:15 pm: A combination of live session and independent assignments \nWeek 2:\nJune 13: 3 hours of independent assignments prior to logging on for the live session from 12:00 pm – 3:15 pm\nJune 14\, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm: Live session with 1 hour of additional independent assignments\nJune 15\, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm: A combination of live session and independent assignments \nRegister\n

SUMMARY:Protective Measures: Chapters in the History of Child Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Protective Measures: Chapters in the History of Child Welfare\n“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” — Nelson Mandela \nPoverty is a socio-economic dynamic as old as humanity itself\, and even society’s youngest citizens are not spared its devastating impacts. In fact\, children are among society’s most vulnerable people. Abuse\, poor access to education\, physical and social discontinuity\, in addition to large amounts of social stigma are just a few of the common life experiences facing children living below the poverty line. Many service structures have been developed to address the difficult circumstances facing young people\, yet society’s response to children living in poverty is often shaped by its history and the mindsets that have developed over time. Indeed society holds strong ideas about what should or should not be done in the lives of our most vulnerable citizens\, but seldom do we take moments to pause and reflect on where those mindsets come from and what approaches have been used. Please join the Keystone Institute\, in collaboration with Ray Lamay\, to explore the history of Child Welfare and consider together what lessons can be learned. SUMMARY:Heroes of the Disability Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Heroes of the Disability Rights Movement\n“Change never happens at the pace we think it should. It happens over years of people joining together\, strategizing\, sharing\, and pulling all the levers they possibly can. Gradually\, excruciatingly slowly\, things start to happen\, and then suddenly\, seemingly out of the blue\, something will tip.” – Judith Heumann \nFor people living with physical and/or intellectual disabilities\, access to the world and basic human rights has never been a “given.” In fact\, throughout history people living with disabilities have often had their rights withheld and even oppressed by professionals\, legislators\, and society at large. The accessibility of public spaces in the United States has been hard won by countless activists whose commitment and persistence have paved the way for many to participate in society and exercise basic rights that many citizens take for granted. Please join the Keystone Institute in highlighting a set of key figures\, including both luminaries and unsung heroes\, of the Disability Rights Movement in the United States. \nDate: August 18 2022 @ 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT

SUMMARY:SRV Lessons from Lives Examined: Session Three: Sir Douglas Bader
DESCRIPTION:SRV Lessons from Lives Examined: Session Three: Sir Douglas Bader\nLearning important lessons from a person’s life is a form of respect and valorization – the travails and challenges are made useful and edifying. Indeed\, in our work\, we encounter many people who despite (or because of) social devaluation and negative life experiences have important stories to tell. Such life stories should be honored and scrutinized. This study group series will review the relevant facts and events in the lives of persons with disabilities or other disadvantages and in an open forum\, draw out SRV-related implications that would have practical application to human service. We are pleased to welcome the mentorship of international SRV practitioner and leader\, Raymond Lemay\, throughout this year’s Study Group Series. We continue our study by exploring the life of Sir Douglas Bader\, Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War who lost both of his legs in combat. His story serves as an eloquent illustration of the power of social roles to foster high expectations and ultimately resiliency. \nRegister\n  \nDate: October 3 2022 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am EDT

SUMMARY:Exploring the Places and Spaces Where Community Happens: A Workshop on Community
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Places and Spaces Where Community Happens: A Workshop on Community\nHow can we make connections to places\, associations\, and opportunities that will give the people we support a chance to participate and contribute their gifts\, talents\, and passions? We teach and talk a lot in our work about helping vulnerable people get involved in their communities\, yet many of us are unsure how to proceed in our own lives\, much less in the lives of others. We invite you to explore community with us in an experiential fashion\, using a process of discovery called Community Mapping. Where does community life take place? Where are the places that people gather together? How can we join in authentically\, and assist others to do so as well? Most importantly\, how might life change if we are successful? This two-day event takes in in-depth look at what is involved in Community Mapping and provides an opportunity to experience it for yourself. Be prepared to explore\, research\, travel the neighborhood\, and talk to others. The first step in understanding where people can offer their gifts is learning the paths and places that already exist and that others have traveled. \nDay 1: October 26\, 2022 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm EDT\nDay 2: November 16\, 2022 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm EST \nRegister

SUMMARY:Eugenics Past\, Present\, and Future: The American War Against the Weak
DESCRIPTION:Eugenics Past\, Present\, and Future: The American War Against the Weak\nThere have been many ideologies throughout history which have shaped society’s treatment of “others.” Few have been more powerful or had more devastating impacts than the Eugenics movement\, the ideas of which were most fully developed in the United States at the turn of the century and adopted by Germany in the early 1920s with horrific consequences. This educational event will focus on the American Eugenics movement\, its champions\, its foes\, and its work to wage war against some of society’s most vulnerable populations through mass sterilization\, brutalization\, segregation\, and euthanasia. Together we will explore the remnants of Eugenics ideas in today’s society and their potential impacts on devalued groups of people. SUMMARY:Distance Introduction to Social Role Valorization
DESCRIPTION:Distance Introduction to Social Role Valorization\nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop\, which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and to those who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. \nWeek 1 \nDay 1:  Tuesday January 17\, 2023:  9:00 am to 12:30 pm Live session with 2 additional hours of independent assignments\nDay 2:  Wednesday January 18\, 2023:  10:00 am to 2:15 pm with 30 additional minutes of independent assignments\nDay 3:  Thursday January 19\, 2023:  10:00 am to 4:15 pm A combination of live session and independent assignments \nWeek 2 \nDay 4:  Monday January 23\, 2023:  3 hours of independent assignments prior to logging on for the live session from 12:00 pm to 3:15 pm\nDay 5:  Tuesday January 24\, 2023:  9:00 am to 2:30 pm Live session with 1 hour of additional independent assignment\nDay 6:  Wednesday January 25\, 2023:  9:00 am to 4:00 pm A combination of live sessions and independent assignments \nRegister
