SUMMARY:Rising Phoenix (SRV Study Group)
DESCRIPTION:Rising Phoenix SRV Study Group: Sir Ludwig Guttman recognized sport as central to the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries\, and organized the first competition for athletes in wheelchairs\, which took place during the opening ceremonies of the 1948 London Olympic Games. The term Paralympic has less to do with the physical condition of “paralysis” and more with a gaming competitions for those with disabilities which would “parallel” the Olympics. Since 1960\, the Paralympics have taken place every four years\, evolving over time to include more disciplines. \nStacy Buchman\, Sandi Slezak\, and Elisa Parmer will lead us as we view “Rising Phoenix\,” which unearths the history of a sports movement which has overcome great adversity to defend the humanity of all people. The film follows several Paralympic athletes as they work tirelessly to achieve athletic championship and redefine how disability is perceived on a global scale. \n*Prior attendance at a full multi-day Introduction to SRV Theory Course is required. \nDocumenting Difference: An SRV Study Group Series: This SRV study group series will explore some of the films produced over the past ten years documenting the life experiences of a wide array of people facing societal devaluation. This year’s documentary selection will focus on real life stories from children and adults experiencing mental health conditions and those living with physical and intellectual impairment. Each study group will incorporate facilitated discussion guided by members of the KHS SRV Leadership Group. Together we will reflect on the life experiences of those being depicted\, what relevant SRV themes can be identified\, and how what we learn can impact the service each of us provides through roles within the organization. \nDetails \nDate:\nDecember 16\, 2021 \nTime:\n10:00 am – 12:30 pm

SUMMARY:Disability in America: Movements that Made Us
DESCRIPTION:Disability in America: Movements that Made Us\nThose of us who live in the United States have grown up learning about the various eras\, movements\, and events that have shaped this nation. More and more we are discovering that many people have been removed from our collective studies. While history classrooms all over the country are learning about events like the European settlement all the way to the Great Depression\, few turn their attention to how the major change points of U.S. history have impacted people living with various impairments and even shaped the way we define disability in our culture. Please join the Keystone Institute as we explore the history of the United States of America through the lens of disability. \nRegister \nAbout the History\, Heroes\, and Pioneers in the Field Series \n“History\, despite its wrenching pain\, cannot be unlived\, however\, if faced with courage\, we need not live it again.” – Maya Angelou \nIt is a longstanding value of Keystone Human Services that in order to truly understand someone\, we must understand the person’s history; not only the story of one’s life\, but also the experiences of one’s people over time. Yet more and more society is being confronted with gaping holes in our knowledge of the histories of certain groups of people which have been forgotten\, suppressed\, and even erased. In 2022 the Keystone Institute will be offering educational opportunities\, open to all employees\, designed to introduce our workforce to histories\, heroes\, and pioneers in the fields of our services. We will explore historical events\, life conditions\, and major figures who have served as change agents within the fields of disability\, and mental difference. In our remembrance of many who have come before us\, we will together affirm our collective commitment to advance the human spirit of those we serve. \nDate: February 24 2022 @ 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM EST

SUMMARY:Employment Works: Making Good Employment a Reality for People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Employment Works: Making Good Employment a Reality for People with Disabilities\nRecognizing that meaningful work is one of the good things of life\, the workshop begins with an examination of historical strategies and ideas about work. We will examine the important role of the employment expert in effectively supporting people on the job in depth. We will also introduce the Discovery Process as a tool to assist people and their supporters to identify what the person could contribute to the workplace and what is necessary for them to be successful. Important considerations about planning and working with potential employers to customize employment form the basis of the final session. Those wishing to help someone in their lives attain a good job will have an opportunity to think more deeply about the steps involved and learn from the experience of others. \n Milton Tyree lives in Louisville\, Kentucky and has 40 years’ experience in the design\, development\, and provision of supports and services centered on people with disabilities having access to valued aspects of everyday life. A particular area of interest has been the ongoing struggle around people with disabilities having good employment. Milt’s efforts have been strongly influenced by the work of the late Dr. Marc Gold\, and he is an associate with Marc Gold & Associates (MG&A). Additionally\, the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s Social Role Valorization (SRV) theory has been foundational in Milt’s understanding of the importance of good employment for people with disabilities\, the reasons this can be difficult\, and considerations for addressing the challenges.    \n *This is a four-part workshop with each session building on the previous. Participants must attend all sessions. The workshop explores several topics related to employment for people with intellectual disabilities. \nMarch 15\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 17\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 22\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 24\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm \nRegister

SUMMARY:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success
DESCRIPTION:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success\nThe history of society’s treatment of people with mental disorders reveals\, time after time\, that backsliding almost always follows progress in our understanding and response to people with mental differences. Periods of enlightenment have been followed by periods of darkness\, with long stretches of neglect in between. On the heels of brutality and some of the worst abuses of people with mental illness\, the reformation of the Moral Treatment movement in the 19th century was responsible for some of the greatest outcomes in the lives of people living with psychiatric disorders during that time. The ideas and assumptions of the Moral Treatment movement remain highly positive and useful solidifying its significance in the history of psychiatry\, yet few have ever heard about it. Please join the Keystone Institute for an exploration of this powerful movement and the potential of its lessons to influence the field of human service. SUMMARY:Distance Introduction to SRV
DESCRIPTION:Distance Introduction to SRV\nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations. \nIn collaboration with Millersville University\, enrolled students can take this course for graduate level course credits. Click here for more information. \nWeek 1:\nJune 6\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm: Live session with 2 additional hours of independent assignments\nJune 7\, 10:00 am – 2:15 pm with 30 additional minutes of independent assignments\nJune 8\, 10:00 am – 4:15 pm: A combination of live session and independent assignments \nWeek 2:\nJune 13: 3 hours of independent assignments prior to logging on for the live session from 12:00 pm – 3:15 pm\nJune 14\, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm: Live session with 1 hour of additional independent assignments\nJune 15\, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm: A combination of live session and independent assignments \nRegister\n

SUMMARY:Protective Measures: Chapters in the History of Child Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Protective Measures: Chapters in the History of Child Welfare\n“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” — Nelson Mandela \nPoverty is a socio-economic dynamic as old as humanity itself\, and even society’s youngest citizens are not spared its devastating impacts. In fact\, children are among society’s most vulnerable people. Abuse\, poor access to education\, physical and social discontinuity\, in addition to large amounts of social stigma are just a few of the common life experiences facing children living below the poverty line. Many service structures have been developed to address the difficult circumstances facing young people\, yet society’s response to children living in poverty is often shaped by its history and the mindsets that have developed over time. Indeed society holds strong ideas about what should or should not be done in the lives of our most vulnerable citizens\, but seldom do we take moments to pause and reflect on where those mindsets come from and what approaches have been used. Please join the Keystone Institute\, in collaboration with Ray Lamay\, to explore the history of Child Welfare and consider together what lessons can be learned. SUMMARY:Heroes of the Disability Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Heroes of the Disability Rights Movement\n“Change never happens at the pace we think it should. It happens over years of people joining together\, strategizing\, sharing\, and pulling all the levers they possibly can. Gradually\, excruciatingly slowly\, things start to happen\, and then suddenly\, seemingly out of the blue\, something will tip.” – Judith Heumann \nFor people living with physical and/or intellectual disabilities\, access to the world and basic human rights has never been a “given.” In fact\, throughout history people living with disabilities have often had their rights withheld and even oppressed by professionals\, legislators\, and society at large. The accessibility of public spaces in the United States has been hard won by countless activists whose commitment and persistence have paved the way for many to participate in society and exercise basic rights that many citizens take for granted. Please join the Keystone Institute in highlighting a set of key figures\, including both luminaries and unsung heroes\, of the Disability Rights Movement in the United States. SUMMARY:SRV Lessons from Lives Examined: Session Three: Sir Douglas Bader
DESCRIPTION:SRV Lessons from Lives Examined: Session Three: Sir Douglas Bader\nLearning important lessons from a person’s life is a form of respect and valorization – the travails and challenges are made useful and edifying. Indeed\, in our work\, we encounter many people who despite (or because of) social devaluation and negative life experiences have important stories to tell. Such life stories should be honored and scrutinized. This study group series will review the relevant facts and events in the lives of persons with disabilities or other disadvantages and in an open forum\, draw out SRV-related implications that would have practical application to human service. We are pleased to welcome the mentorship of international SRV practitioner and leader\, Raymond Lemay\, throughout this year’s Study Group Series. We continue our study by exploring the life of Sir Douglas Bader\, Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War who lost both of his legs in combat. His story serves as an eloquent illustration of the power of social roles to foster high expectations and ultimately resiliency. \nRegister\n  \nDate: October 3 2022 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am EDT
