SUMMARY:Ideas That Matter
DESCRIPTION:Ideas That Matter\nIdeas that Matter is a half-day workshop aimed at offering a very brief look into some of Keystone Human Services’ foundational principles. We begin by exploring the history of disability\, including how people with disabilities have been treated and thought about throughout history. We will take time to consider the threads and consequences of historical mindsets on the treatment of people today. \nLooking forward\, we discuss KHS’s vision statement in a small group format\, sharing insights into how it resonates with and impacts our work individually and collectively. The session ends with a glimpse into the ideas of Social Role Valorization\, a powerful framework for assisting people we serve to gain access to the good things of life. \nPart of the New Employee Orientation process\, all Keystone Human Services employees are required to attend this core developmental course. Employees should sign up through Relias.

SUMMARY:Distance Introduction to Social Role Valorization
DESCRIPTION:Distance Introduction to Social Role Valorization\nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations. \nCourse Schedule: \nWeek 1 \nDay 1:  Tuesday\, February 18\, 2025:  9:00 am to 12:45 pm Live session with 2 additional hours of independent assignments\nDay 2:  Wednesday\, February 19\, 2025:  10:00 am to 2:15 pm with 30 additional minutes of independent assignments\nDay 3:  Thursday\, February 20\, 2025:  10:00 am to 4:15 pm A combination of live session and independent assignments \nWeek 2 \nDay 4:  Tuesday\, February 25\, 2025:  3 hours of independent assignments prior to logging on for the live session from 12:00 pm to 3:15 pm\nDay 5:  Wednesday\, February 26\, 2025:  9:00 am to 2:30 pm Live session with 1-hour independent assignments\nDay 6:  Thursday\, February 27\, 2025:  9:00 am to 4:00 pm A combination of live sessions and independent assignments \n*This course will take place entirely online.  Participants must attend every session in order to receive credit for the workshop.* \nRegister

SUMMARY:The Road Most Traveled: Using the Culturally Valued Analogue as Your Guide
DESCRIPTION:The Road Most Traveled: Using the Culturally Valued Analogue as Your Guide\n \nMapping out a vision of a big\, full life for vulnerable people can be full of road bumps. Sometimes we don’t know people very well\, sometimes people are uncertain themselves about their identity\, gifts\, talents and what their future could hold; and sometimes we are so lost in “human service land” that we lose sight of the typical pathways of life and all they have to offer people. But when we are stuck while developing roles\, designing services or even planning a house warming party for someone\, using the culturally valued analogue (CVA) can provide us some tried and true guidance to get started\, by reminding us to consider “What happens for people with a valued status?” \nJoin us to learn more about using the CVA to keep us moving in the right direction as we walk with vulnerable people. \nRegister

SUMMARY:SRV Study Group: Better Off Dead
DESCRIPTION:SRV Study Group: Better Off Dead\n \nIn recent years and in many places\, euthanasia laws have become increasingly permissible\, quite often as they relate to people who are marginalized. Laws include broader and broader definitions of who medical assistance in dying can be applied to and eradicate more and more safeguards\, all posing a serious threat to people with disabilities when making the most profound and irreversible decision a person can make. Consider this alongside the countless studies that have consistently revealed that health care providers hold negative views of people with disabilities that too frequently translates to failures to equitably protect\, serve\, or support disabled people and the results are devastating. \nPlease join the Keystone Institute\, along with the SRV Leadership team\, to watch the thought provoking and prescient documentary Better Off Dead\, which explores this topic from the perspective of people living with disabilities. Following the online screening of the documentary we will use SRV to guide our discussion of these life and death issues. Registration for this event is open to those who have completed a full 28-hour in-person or 32-hour online SRV workshop. \nRegister

SUMMARY:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions
DESCRIPTION:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions\n \nMuch can be learned about human effort\, societal forces of oppression and marginalization\, and the possibilities for change by studying the rise and fall of “The Great Institutions.” This presentation will describe the founding of such institutions\, with lofty and earnest aspirations\, through the vast growth of segregation and congregation fed by eugenics ideology\, and the eventual decline of the “total institution.” \nThrough photos\, stories of people’s lives and narrative\, we will explore the connections with today’s services\, the insidious staying power of segregation\, and the lessons we can draw from this. This workshop will be led by Betsy Neuville\, who worked for many years creating community alternatives for hundreds of institutionalized people all over the world and has supported the settlement agreements at numerous facilities which have promised better lives for people. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Closing the Revolving Doors: A Lifespan Approach to Deinstitutionalization – a Side Event at the 18th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD
DESCRIPTION:Keystone Human Services International is pleased to organize the side event “Closing the Revolving Doors: A Lifespan Approach to Deinstitutionalization” during the 18th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Panelists will discuss some of the critical issues\, challenges and opportunities around deinstitutionalization for children and adults with disabilities and share success stories of partnerships that have led to sustainable care reform and community-based supports. \nInstitutionalization for children and adults with disabilities is a revolving door. Once someone enters an institution\, there are few exit pathways\, despite the affirmation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) of the right of all people with disabilities to live independently in and be part of the community. \nA lifespan approach incorporating care reform\, is required to transition away from institutions as the default form of care and achieve full participation and acceptance in the community. \nThe side event will: \n\nDraw from experiences particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and the Global South to highlight the need for a lifespan approach\nHighlight successful examples of transitioning away from institutions\nCollectively identify key action points to advance deinstitutionalization and operationalize Article 19\nExplore how deinstitutionalization and care reform play a key role in building family and community resilience\, social cohesion\, and sustainable development\nIdentify ways in which deinstitutionalization principles can be embedded in the global discourse around the SDGs and post-2030 development agenda\n\nThe event is organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Moldova in New York\, the Ministry of Labor & Social Protection\, Government of Moldova\, and Keystone Human Services International with co-hosts the Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development Office\, Government of UK; UNICEF; and Hope and Homes for Children. \nThis in-person event will also be streamed live on UN Web TV. The Direct Link to view our side event is  https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k15/k15x366bl8. \nMore details about the side event are available through the UN’s COSP website.
