SUMMARY:Healing Voices (SRV Study Group)
DESCRIPTION:Healing Voices: Model Coherency informs us that our fundamental assumptions about people\, the world\, and human nature will drive our actions. These assumptions play out unconsciously and powerfully in the service content that gets provided to devalued people. So many assumptions drive our beliefs about how to address psychiatric disorders; the belief that they are rooted in physiological causes\, accompanied by “symptoms” and labeled as “syndromes” is just one set of beliefs that has resulted in massive medication of people with such disorders. \nThe documentary “Healing Voices” speaks to the historic perceptions behind society’s response to psychological conditions over time and challenges the use of a medical model of care in what is now largely referred to as the field of “mental health.” This film follows three men and women with lived experience of a psychiatric condition as they advocate for less medication and more connections to others experiencing auditory and visual hallucinations through a network of “listening spaces.” Join the Keystone Institute for a viewing of the documentary “Healing Voices” followed by facilitated group discussion and analysis with Betsy Neuville\, Ellwyn Andres\, and Matthew Nguyen. \n*Prior attendance at a full multi-day Introduction to SRV Theory Course is required. \nDocumenting Difference: An SRV Study Group Series: This SRV study group series will explore some of the films produced over the past ten years documenting the life experiences of a wide array of people facing societal devaluation. This year’s documentary selection will focus on real life stories from children and adults experiencing mental health conditions and those living with physical and intellectual impairment. Each study group will incorporate facilitated discussion guided by members of the KHS SRV Leadership Group. Together we will reflect on the life experiences of those being depicted\, what relevant SRV themes can be identified\, and how what we learn can impact the service each of us provides through roles within the organization. \nDetails \nDate:\nOctober 21\, 2021 \nTime:\n10:00 am – 12:30 pm

SUMMARY:Rising Phoenix (SRV Study Group)
DESCRIPTION:Rising Phoenix SRV Study Group: Sir Ludwig Guttman recognized sport as central to the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries\, and organized the first competition for athletes in wheelchairs\, which took place during the opening ceremonies of the 1948 London Olympic Games. The term Paralympic has less to do with the physical condition of “paralysis” and more with a gaming competitions for those with disabilities which would “parallel” the Olympics. Since 1960\, the Paralympics have taken place every four years\, evolving over time to include more disciplines. \nStacy Buchman\, Sandi Slezak\, and Elisa Parmer will lead us as we view “Rising Phoenix\,” which unearths the history of a sports movement which has overcome great adversity to defend the humanity of all people. The film follows several Paralympic athletes as they work tirelessly to achieve athletic championship and redefine how disability is perceived on a global scale. \nDetails \nDate:\nDecember 16\, 2021 \nTime:\n10:00 am – 12:30 pm

SUMMARY:Disability in America: Movements that Made Us
DESCRIPTION:Disability in America: Movements that Made Us\nThose of us who live in the United States have grown up learning about the various eras\, movements\, and events that have shaped this nation. More and more we are discovering that many people have been removed from our collective studies. While history classrooms all over the country are learning about events like the European settlement all the way to the Great Depression\, few turn their attention to how the major change points of U.S. history have impacted people living with various impairments and even shaped the way we define disability in our culture. Please join the Keystone Institute as we explore the history of the United States of America through the lens of disability. \nRegister \nAbout the History\, Heroes\, and Pioneers in the Field Series \n“History\, despite its wrenching pain\, cannot be unlived\, however\, if faced with courage\, we need not live it again.” – Maya Angelou \nIt is a longstanding value of Keystone Human Services that in order to truly understand someone\, we must understand the person’s history; not only the story of one’s life\, but also the experiences of one’s people over time. Yet more and more society is being confronted with gaping holes in our knowledge of the histories of certain groups of people which have been forgotten\, suppressed\, and even erased. In 2022 the Keystone Institute will be offering educational opportunities\, open to all employees\, designed to introduce our workforce to histories\, heroes\, and pioneers in the fields of our services. We will explore historical events\, life conditions\, and major figures who have served as change agents within the fields of disability\, and mental difference. In our remembrance of many who have come before us\, we will together affirm our collective commitment to advance the human spirit of those we serve. \nDate: February 24 2022 @ 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM EST

SUMMARY:Employment Works: Making Good Employment a Reality for People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Employment Works: Making Good Employment a Reality for People with Disabilities\nRecognizing that meaningful work is one of the good things of life\, the workshop begins with an examination of historical strategies and ideas about work. We will examine the important role of the employment expert in effectively supporting people on the job in depth. We will also introduce the Discovery Process as a tool to assist people and their supporters to identify what the person could contribute to the workplace and what is necessary for them to be successful. Important considerations about planning and working with potential employers to customize employment form the basis of the final session. Those wishing to help someone in their lives attain a good job will have an opportunity to think more deeply about the steps involved and learn from the experience of others. \n Milton Tyree lives in Louisville\, Kentucky and has 40 years’ experience in the design\, development\, and provision of supports and services centered on people with disabilities having access to valued aspects of everyday life. A particular area of interest has been the ongoing struggle around people with disabilities having good employment. Milt’s efforts have been strongly influenced by the work of the late Dr. Marc Gold\, and he is an associate with Marc Gold & Associates (MG&A). Additionally\, the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s Social Role Valorization (SRV) theory has been foundational in Milt’s understanding of the importance of good employment for people with disabilities\, the reasons this can be difficult\, and considerations for addressing the challenges.    \n *This is a four-part workshop with each session building on the previous. Participants must attend all sessions. The workshop explores several topics related to employment for people with intellectual disabilities. \nMarch 15\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 17\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 22\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm\nMarch 24\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm \nRegister

SUMMARY:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success
DESCRIPTION:Moral Treatment: A Forgotten Success\nThe history of society’s treatment of people with mental disorders reveals\, time after time\, that backsliding almost always follows progress in our understanding and response to people with mental differences. Periods of enlightenment have been followed by periods of darkness\, with long stretches of neglect in between. On the heels of brutality and some of the worst abuses of people with mental illness\, the reformation of the Moral Treatment movement in the 19th century was responsible for some of the greatest outcomes in the lives of people living with psychiatric disorders during that time. The ideas and assumptions of the Moral Treatment movement remain highly positive and useful solidifying its significance in the history of psychiatry\, yet few have ever heard about it. Please join the Keystone Institute for an exploration of this powerful movement and the potential of its lessons to influence the field of human service.
