SUMMARY:Ideas That Matter
DESCRIPTION:Ideas That Matter\nIdeas that Matter is a half-day workshop aimed at offering a very brief look into some of Keystone Human Services’ foundational principles. We begin by exploring the history of disability\, including how people with disabilities have been treated and thought about throughout history. We will take time to consider the threads and consequences of historical mindsets on the treatment of people today. \nLooking forward\, we discuss KHS’s vision statement in a small group format\, sharing insights into how it resonates with and impacts our work individually and collectively. The session ends with a glimpse into the ideas of Social Role Valorization\, a powerful framework for assisting people we serve to gain access to the good things of life. \nPart of the New Employee Orientation process\, all Keystone Human Services employees are required to attend this core developmental course. Employees should sign up through Relias.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Places and Spaces Where Community Happens: A Workshop on Community Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Places and Spaces Where Community Happens: A Workshop on Community Mapping\n June 9 2026 @ 9:00 AM – June 30 2026 @ 1:30 PM EDT\nHow can we make connections to places\, associations\, and opportunities that will give the people we support a chance to participate and contribute their gifts\, talents\, and passions? We teach and talk a lot in our work about helping vulnerable people get involved in their communities\, yet many of us are unsure how to proceed in our own lives\, much less in the lives of others. We invite you to explore community with us in an experiential fashion\, using a process of discovery called Community Mapping. Where does community life take place? Where are the places that people gather together? How can we join in authentically\, and assist others to do so as well? Most importantly\, how might life change if we are successful? This two-day event takes an in-depth look at what is involved in Community Mapping and have an opportunity to experience it for yourself. \nBe prepared to explore\, research\, travel the neighborhood\, and talk to others – the first step in understanding where people can offer their gifts is learning the paths and places that already exist\, and that others have traveled. \n6/9 and 6/30 Registration\nDay 1 June 9\, 2026 9:00 am – 1:30 pm EDT \nDay 2 June 30\, 2026 9:00 am – 1:30 pm EDT

SUMMARY:SRV Study Group: Aging in Place
DESCRIPTION:We often pronounce service practices overwhelmingly “good” or “bad\,” yet the reality is more complex as any practice may offer both advantages and pitfalls for vulnerable people. SRV gives us a unique way to assess impact: spotting what helps people access the good things of life\, while revealing risks and shortcomings that could cause harm. \nThis study group series invites SRV-savvy folks to examine practices and discuss hopeful possibilities and worries together. \nThis six-session study group series is designed to explore common human service practices through the lens of Social Role Valorization (SRV). Throughout the series\, we’ll take a closer look at practices often labeled as “good” or “bad” and uncover the nuances – what truly helps people access the good things of life\, and what might unintentionally cause harm. Each session will provide context\, real-world examples\, and collaborative analysis\, giving us the chance to identify hopeful possibilities and safeguard against potential pitfalls. \nRegister

SUMMARY:The Road Most Traveled: Using the Culturally Valued Analogue as Your Guide
DESCRIPTION:The Road Most Traveled: Using the Culturally Valued Analogue as Your Guide\nJuly 15 2026 @ 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT\nMapping out a vision of a big\, full life for vulnerable people can be full of road bumps. Sometimes we don’t know people very well\, sometimes people are uncertain themselves about their identity\, gifts\, talents and what their future could hold; and sometimes we are so lost in “human service land” that we lose sight of the typical pathways of life and all they have to offer people. But when we are stuck while developing roles\, designing services or even planning a housewarming party for someone\, using the culturally valued analogue (CVA) can provide us some tried and true guidance to get started\, by reminding us to consider “What happens for people with a valued status?” \nJoin us to learn more about using the CVA to keep us moving in the right direction as we walk with vulnerable people. \nRegister

SUMMARY:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions
DESCRIPTION:The History and Implications of America’s Segregated Institutions\nJuly 30 2026 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EDT\nMuch can be learned about human effort\, societal forces of oppression and marginalization\, and the possibilities for change by studying the rise and fall of “The Great Institutions.” This presentation will describe the founding of such institutions\, with lofty and earnest aspirations\, through the vast growth of segregation and congregation fed by eugenics ideology\, and the eventual decline of the “total institution.” \nThrough photos\, stories of people’s lives and narrative\, we will explore the connections with today’s services\, the insidious staying power of segregation\, and the lessons we can draw from this. This workshop will be led by Betsy Neuville\, who worked for many years creating community alternatives for hundreds of institutionalized people all over the world and has supported the settlement agreements at numerous facilities which have promised better lives for people. \nRegister

SUMMARY:SRV Study Group: Technology in Human Services
\nRegister
