SUMMARY:Deaf Jam (SRV Study Group)
DESCRIPTION:Deaf Jam: In the absence of sound\, a deaf teenager\, Aneta Brodski\, wrestles with the desire to be heard as well as remain true to her own voice. Aneta discovers a new way of expressing herself through spoken word poetry. While many perceive her deafness as a significant obstacle in a culture where poetry is designed to be spoken aloud\, Aneta channels her impairment as part of her unique identity to craft rhythmic\, lyrical\, and three dimensional language conveying her distinct view of the world. \nPlease join the Keystone Institute as we follow Aneta’s journey as a spoken word poet. Kim Riegel and Matthew Nguyen will lead us in a discussion surrounding how this meaningful role has the potential to open the door to individuality\, collaboration\, and meaningful relationships. \n*Prior attendance at a full multi-day Introduction to SRV Theory Course is required. \nDocumenting Difference: An SRV Study Group Series: This SRV study group series will explore some of the films produced over the past ten years documenting the life experiences of a wide array of people facing societal devaluation. This year’s documentary selection will focus on real life stories from children and adults experiencing mental health conditions and those living with physical and intellectual impairment. Each study group will incorporate facilitated discussion guided by members of the KHS SRV Leadership Group. Together we will reflect on the life experiences of those being depicted\, what relevant SRV themes can be identified\, and how what we learn can impact the service each of us provides through roles within the organization. \nDetails \nDate:\nAugust 12\, 2021 \nTime:\n10:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT
